Healthcare Reform

Health Care Reform Will Affect MCHA Enrollees

In 2010, President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which prevents insurance companies from denying applicants based on their pre-existing conditions. As a result, Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association (MCHA) enrollees will soon be able to purchase health insurance without being denied because of past or current illnesses.

In other words, you will have insurance options besides MCHA.

As always, you can discuss choices and purchase a plan through an insurance broker or directly from an insurance carrier, but this fall Minnesotans will have another option.  Beginning October 1, 2013 (for coverage no earlier than January 1, 2014,) all Minnesotans will be able to purchase individual health insurance through a new online marketplace called the MNsure.

With new insurance options for our enrollees, the need for MCHA will eventually disappear. Our staff is working closely with the Department of Commerce on a plan to transition our enrollees to new coverage. We are committed to making your transition into a new plan through MNsure or the private insurance market as easy as possible.

Because MNsure’s launch is only a few months away, MCHA will bring you news about upcoming changes. Check back for updated information.

Learn More about MNsure

The development of MNsure is key to health reform implementation in Minnesota.   In order to educate Minnesotans about how this new marketplace will impact their lives, many government and community organizations have created online resources.  We have included links to helpful sites below.

Important

As of January 1, 2014, insurance companies can no longer deny you or charge more because of your pre-existing condition. As a result, the need for the Minnesota Comprehensive Health Association (MCHA) will eventually go away.

You can still apply for coverage through MCHA, but we encourage you to look for health insurance coverage on MNsure, Minnesota's new online insurance marketplace, which opens for enrollment on October 1st.
